And, for the Netherlands, both conflicts came very close. The war in the former Yugoslavia in the 1990s and the fighting in Donbas in 2014 had terrible consequences for the people involved, innocent citizens. The world wars Stefan Zweig lived through seemed like a distant nightmare. When I accepted the invitation to come here today to talk about European unity, we all believed that war on this continent was a thing of the past. Speaking about the two world wars, he said he’d witnessed the ‘furchtbarsten Niederlage der Vernunft und des wildesten Triumphes der Brutalität innerhalb der Chronik der Zeiten.’ (…the most terrible defeat of reason and the most savage triumph of brutality ever chronicled).
